The City of Missoula purchased the 470-acre Randolph property in 1996 to preserve open space for animals, plants and people. The survival of historic sites like the Moon-Randolph Homestead relies heavily on volunteer contributions.
On Global Youth Service Day, eight students from Sentinel High School worked together with University of Montana staff, the Flagship program, and Americorps VISTA and Montana Campus Corps members from around Missoula to revitalize the Moon-Randolph Homestead for the upcoming spring season.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. volunteers built rainwater catchments, tilled soil, prepared orchards and cleaning out chicken and goat pens to ensure the fertility of one of Missoula's hidden treasures. Caretaker Andy Smetanka led a tour of the property, and provided information about the site's history.
